Becoming a referee in NSW
The football
refereeing structure in NSW supports over 3200 referees spread across some 42 local branches/districts (including the NSW
State League Football Referees Inc.)
Districts
This is
the starting point for people who are interested in becoming a referee, but do not yet hold the required qualification or
experience. In order to become a qualified referee you will be required to complete a referee entrance level course. Most
local district associations run a series of these courses during the year. The course consists of the following:
LEVEL
5 - Theory examination: this involves attending a series of lectures on the Laws of the Game (LOTG) and completing a multiple-choice
examination. This examination is set by the FFA and is a national assessment applied across Australia. On successfully completing
the examination stage you will receive a referee theory certificate.
LEVEL 4 - Attending a further 3 hour lecture on
the practical elements of refereeing including positioning, signals, man-management as well as other local requirements such
as accessing appointments, wet weather arrangements, completing match cards, issuing and reporting cautions and send-offs
etc.
LEVEL 3 - Field tests: this requires that you be assessed by a suitably qualified local branch assessor
or inspector, on a level of game that you branch considers appropriate for you as a starting point. On successful completion
of your field test and assessment you will then become a qualified referee and will be issued with the appropriate Referee
Certificate.
Career paths can be made for those referees who have the ability, commitment, dedication and luck to go
all the way to becoming a FIFA referee. Visit our page on REFEREE GRADING for more info.
